rmlint is a high-performance filesystem linter that finds duplicate files and other cleanup candidates and produces reviewable reports or cleanup scripts.

Christopher Pahl began rmlint in 2010 as a faster alternative to fdupes. The project subsequently underwent a substantial rewrite for its 2.x generation and developed into a C and GLib-based filesystem scanner with configurable hashing, traversal, ranking, and output behavior.

Daniel Thomas contributed from 2014, and later maintainers continued the 2.x line. The project built extensive Sphinx documentation, a replayable JSON workflow, and filesystem-aware cleanup strategies including hardlinks, reflinks, and native deduplication.

rmlint has been packaged by numerous Unix-like distributions and package systems. Its official installation guide documents availability through Fedora, Arch Linux, Debian, Homebrew, and FreeBSD, while the supplied package facts also identify Alpine, MacPorts, Nix, and Ubuntu packages.

Since rmlint 2.4.0, the distribution has included the optional Shredder GTK interface, broadening the project beyond its original command-line audience while preserving the review-before-removal workflow.

Users normally run rmlint against one or more directories. The default workflow writes human-readable results, JSON data, and an executable rmlint.sh cleanup script; the scan itself does not immediately remove the discovered files.

Advanced users select individual lint types, rank which duplicate should be retained, replay prior JSON results, choose checksum algorithms, and configure hardlink, reflink, or native-deduplication output.
