QStat was originally created by Steve Jankowski to query Quake-family and other Internet game servers. After the original SourceForge project became difficult to administer and its creator could no longer be reached, an active maintainer moved development to GitHub; the rocketsciencegg repository identifies the Multiplay lineage as the new official home.

QStat loads `qstat.cfg` when that file is present in the current working directory. An alternative configuration can be selected with `QSTAT_CONFIG` or the `-cfg` option; therefore no single fixed path exists beyond the documented current-directory default.
