Prometheus began at SoundCloud in 2012 as an open-source monitoring and alerting system designed for service-oriented and increasingly dynamic infrastructure.
Prometheus 1.0 arrived in July 2016 with stability commitments for core APIs, PromQL, the data model, rule formats, and configuration. Prometheus 2.0 followed in November 2017 with a new storage subsystem designed for higher churn and better resource efficiency.

Prometheus was introduced for production monitoring at SoundCloud in 2013, gained early users including Docker and Boxever in 2014, and was publicly announced in January 2015.
In 2016 it joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation as the foundation's second hosted project after Kubernetes. CNCF graduated Prometheus in 2018, citing its maturity, stability, governance, and widening adoption.

Operators define scrape jobs, service discovery, and rule files in `prometheus.yml`, then query stored series with PromQL. Configuration can be reloaded with `SIGHUP` or the lifecycle HTTP endpoint.
A typical deployment combines application instrumentation and exporters with a Prometheus server, Alertmanager for notification delivery, and Grafana for production dashboards.
