PostgreSQL 15 is the 2022 major line of the open-source object-relational database system, distributed with a broad server, client, administration, backup, and development toolkit.

PostgreSQL descends from the POSTGRES project begun at the University of California, Berkeley in 1986 under Michael Stonebraker. Andrew Yu and Jolly Chen added an SQL interpreter in 1994 and released the result as Postgres95; the community adopted the PostgreSQL name in 1996 to reflect both the POSTGRES lineage and SQL support.

PostgreSQL 15 added the SQL-standard `MERGE` command, row filters and column lists for logical replication publications, JSON-formatted server logs, zstd compression options, and sorting performance improvements.
