PMIx, the Process Management Interface for Exascale, is a standalone client/server library and standard-facing reference implementation for communication among HPC applications, tools, launchers, resource managers, and schedulers.

项目历史

The earlier PMI interfaces from MPICH exchanged process wire-up information, but exascale-scale launches exposed limitations in PMI-1 and PMI-2. PMIx extended that model to support rapid startup and application-resource-manager interaction at very large scale.

The OpenPMIx library predates the separately maintained PMIx Standard by several years. The official documentation notes that the reference library remains the only implementation of the standard, so the names OpenPMIx and PMIx are commonly used interchangeably.

PMIx was designed for adoption by resource managers, launchers, schedulers, MPI libraries, applications, and HPC tools. The reference implementation includes client and server libraries and preserves compatibility with the older PMI-1 and PMI-2 interfaces.

Open MPI and PRRTE are prominent adopters. Official administration documentation describes PRRTE as the PMIx reference runtime and explains that Open MPI includes matched PMIx and PRRTE components or can be built against external installations.

Application and tool developers use PMIx APIs to publish, look up, query, monitor, and exchange process or job information. Host environments embed the PMIx server library and provide policy, launch, and resource-management callbacks.

Administrators and developers inspect the installation with `pmix_info` and tune Modular Component Architecture parameters through environment variables or the documented user and system parameter files.
