Pluto was originally designed around deprecations associated with Kubernetes 1.16. As further removals accumulated, it developed a version database, configurable target versions, multiple component support, and an additional-versions mechanism for custom checks.

The project expanded from file and Helm detection into broader cluster scanning, structured output, CI-specific exit behavior, environment-variable configuration, and signed release artifacts and container images.

Pluto grew around the operational problem exposed by Kubernetes API removals: an API server can convert stored objects to a newer representation, making a simple live query insufficient to reveal the version originally deployed.

The project supports static manifests, Helm charts, and live Helm releases, and documents use as a local CLI and as a GitHub Action. Machine-readable output and meaningful exit codes make it suitable for upgrade-readiness checks in CI.

For CI, Pluto returns distinct exit codes for deprecated APIs, removed APIs, and unavailable replacements. Users can add organization-specific checks through an additional versions file supplied by flag or environment variable.
