Apple's Pkl team announced the first open-source release on February 1, 2024. The project was presented as an embeddable configuration language intended to address repetition, weak validation, and poor tooling in large JSON, YAML, and property-list configurations.

The project subsequently expanded its tooling through the Pkl Evolution proposal process, runtime bindings, editor integrations, a package ecosystem, formatting support, and a dedicated Language Server.
