PIE, the PHP Installer for Extensions, is PHP's official installer for third-party native extensions and the recommended successor to PECL.

The PHP Foundation announced PIE's pre-release on November 19, 2024. Development was commissioned by the Sovereign Tech Agency to provide a modern alternative to PECL and make extensions first-class PHP ecosystem packages.

PIE was designed as a PHAR-distributed tool resembling Composer, but its installation target is PHP Modules and Zend Extensions rather than a project's PHP library dependencies.

PHP's official manual now recommends PIE in place of the deprecated PECL installer. PIE-compatible extensions are published through Packagist, aligning native-extension discovery with familiar PHP package workflows.

Developers use commands such as `pie install vendor/extension` to locate an extension through Packagist, obtain source or a Windows binary, build when necessary, install it into the selected PHP runtime, and enable it through the appropriate PHP INI mechanism. PIE also supports downloading, building, inspecting, and selecting extensions for alternate PHP installations.
