Marko Kreen announced PgBouncer 1.0 from Skype on March 13, 2007. The initial release emphasized low overhead, online administration, restart without dropping connections, and statement pooling for PL/Proxy workloads.
The project remained deliberately focused on PostgreSQL connection pooling. Session, transaction, and statement modes became its defining interface, while later releases improved protocol compatibility and reduced limitations in transaction-pooled applications.

PgBouncer became a standard PostgreSQL infrastructure component for applications that open more client connections than a database server should handle directly. Its lightweight process model and broad package-manager availability made it practical to deploy near applications, near PostgreSQL, or on both tiers.
Its continuing development has tracked production PostgreSQL protocol concerns, including authentication, TLS, observability, failover behavior, and support for protocol-level prepared statements in transaction and statement pooling modes.

Operators create a pgbouncer.ini file describing target databases, listeners, authentication, pooling mode, and pool sizes; maintain an authentication file or auth_query; direct applications to PgBouncer's port; and inspect or control pools through its administrative database and SHOW commands.
