Percona introduced XtraBackup during the MySQL 5.x and InnoDB era as an open-source physical hot-backup utility. An early alpha was public in March 2009, and XtraBackup 1.0 was announced on 10 December 2009.
Later generations tracked major MySQL storage changes. The current Homebrew formula corresponds to the 8.4 documentation line, which supports MySQL 8.4, Percona Server for MySQL 8.4, and Percona XtraDB Cluster 8.4 rather than 8.0 or 9.x servers.

XtraBackup addressed a practical gap between portable logical dumps and storage-aware physical backups for large MySQL installations. It became useful where operators needed transaction processing to continue during backup windows.
The project is used for scheduled backups, replication provisioning, disaster-recovery exercises, and streamed cloud backups. Its version lines follow server storage formats closely because redo logs and data dictionaries change between MySQL generations.

A typical workflow runs `xtrabackup --backup`, prepares the resulting files by applying redo with `--prepare`, and restores them with `--copy-back` or `--move-back`. Full and incremental backups can also be compressed, encrypted, or streamed.
`xtrabackup` reads the `xtrabackup` and `mysqld` groups from standard MySQL option files. Before relying on a backup, operators should verify server compatibility and test restoration.
