overview
Pythonic task management & command execution
history
Invoke is a Python library and CLI for shell-oriented subprocess execution and Python-defined task collections.
Invoke grew from the task-execution half of Fabric 1.x. Fabric had combined local tasks and shell commands with remote SSH operations; during planning for Fabric 2, those concerns were separated, with Invoke focusing on local and abstract task execution and Fabric becoming a layer built partly on Invoke's APIs.
Invoke has been adopted primarily by Python repositories that want automation expressed as normal decorated Python functions instead of Make syntax or ad hoc shell scripts. Common task collections wrap testing, linting, documentation, release, and development-environment commands behind the short `inv` entry point.
Define decorated functions in `tasks.py`, then invoke them with `invoke` or `inv`. Configuration can be layered through collection settings, system, user, and project files, environment variables, a runtime file selected with `-f` or `INVOKE_RUNTIME_CONFIG`, and command-line options.
Invoke represents the extraction of a reusable local task engine from a larger deployment tool. Its split from Fabric separated lightweight subprocess and task concerns from SSH and cryptographic dependencies, while its layered configuration system made the task runner suitable as both a project tool and a library embedded by downstream applications.
security posture
narrow executable package without higher-risk signals.
green risk · low confidence · appliance
Before unattended agent use, check whether the tool reads plaintext credentials, writes remote state, publishes artifacts, or shells out to plugins.
local files
These source-backed paths show where this package keeps local settings or durable credentials. Automic Vault can use them as review targets for secret scanning, migration, and command approval.
Config paths the tool may read or write during local use.
