overview
Secure and efficient FTP server
history
Pure-FTPd is a portable, security-oriented FTP and FTPS server descended from Troll-FTPd and designed for straightforward administration, hosting, and production service.
Pure-FTPd descends from Troll-FTPd, written by Arnt Gulbrandsen at Troll Tech. After Troll-FTPd became inactive, Frank Denis collected patches, audited and repackaged the code, rewrote its documentation, and created Pure-FTPd.
The first Pure-FTPd release was numbered 0.90 and was based on Troll-FTPd 1.25 with changes from 1.26 backported. The project retained Troll-FTPd's emphasis on standards conformance, ease of setup, and security while adding the features needed for production and hosting deployments.
Upstream documentation says Pure-FTPd is used by Unix newcomers, embedded systems, heavily loaded production servers, and hosting services. Its portability across Linux, BSD variants, macOS, Solaris, AIX, and other Unix-like systems helped it become a longstanding distribution package.
Its hosting-oriented adoption is supported by virtual users, quotas, chrooting, virtual hosts, SQL and LDAP authentication, bandwidth controls, TLS, and external authentication modules.
Administrators run Pure-FTPd as a standalone daemon or under a service supervisor, configuring it with command-line switches or an optional pure-ftpd.conf file. Common deployments use system, PAM, PureDB, LDAP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or custom authentication together with chrooting, quotas, virtual hosting, passive-port controls, and TLS.
The pure-pw utility manages optional FTP-only virtual accounts. Its default text and indexed databases are /etc/pureftpd.passwd and /etc/pureftpd.pdb, although deployments may select other paths or use external authentication instead.
Pure-FTPd represents the security-focused generation of Unix FTP daemons that followed older servers such as Troll-FTPd and WU-FTPd. Package maintainers value its small-server orientation, portable source tree, optional feature set, command-line configuration, and conventional daemon-management utilities.
It remains relevant for appliances, hosting systems, laboratories, archives, and compatibility environments that still require FTP or FTPS despite the protocol's declining role in new deployments.
