PocketBase is a self-hosted backend in one executable, combining embedded SQLite, authentication, file storage, realtime subscriptions, APIs and an administration dashboard.

Project history

Gani Georgiev created PocketBase to support self-contained applications that could run on one server without installing separate database and backend services. Its design grew out of needs encountered in the Presentator project.

The project expanded its original SQLite, authentication, file and realtime feature set with JavaScript and Go extensibility, migrations, SDKs, backups and production hardening while remaining pre-1.0.

In October 2026 the maintainer archived the GitHub organization and moved active development to a self-hosted source-control service at ganigeorgiev.com. New development and releases now occur there rather than on an official GitHub mirror.

Adoption history

PocketBase found a niche among prototypes, internal tools, mobile and web applications, and self-hosted projects that wanted backend services without assembling and operating several daemons.

Its embedded SQLite database, administration dashboard, client SDKs and single-executable distribution lower setup costs. The official FAQ describes it as suitable for small and midsize applications that can scale vertically on one server.

How it is used

Developers start the server with pocketbase serve, define collections through the dashboard or migrations, and consume its Web APIs and realtime subscriptions from browser, mobile or server applications.

Runtime state lives in pb_data by default, while generated schema migrations live in pb_migrations and JavaScript hooks commonly live in pb_hooks. These are data and source directories rather than a documented standalone configuration or credentials file.
