history
PHP 8.4 is a version-pinned distribution of PHP for applications, extensions, and CI jobs targeting the PHP 8.4 language and ABI.
PHP began with Rasmus Lerdorf's personal CGI tools in 1994 and a public source release in 1995. PHP 3 established the collaborative language project, PHP 4 introduced the Zend Engine, PHP 7 delivered major runtime-performance improvements, and PHP 8 expanded the type system and modern language syntax.
PHP 8.4.0 was released on 21 November 2024.
PHP 8.4 introduced property hooks, asymmetric property visibility, an updated DOM API, and other language and performance work. Property hooks were particularly notable because computed and guarded properties became visible to IDEs and static analyzers as native language constructs.
The versioned Homebrew package provides a stable branch target while the unversioned PHP formula proceeds to newer minor series. Projects use that separation for production parity, framework certification, extension builds, and multi-version CI.
The installed command set covers CLI execution, CGI/FPM web serving, phpdbg debugging, PEAR/PECL workflows, PHAR archives, and native-extension builds using phpize and php-config.
PHP reads php.ini according to the compiled and SAPI-specific search order. CGI/FastCGI installations may additionally apply .user.ini settings in application directories.
The keg-only packaging model permits PHP 8.4 to live alongside other PHP branches. For package maintainers, that means Composer constraints, extension ABI compatibility, deprecations, and framework support can be tested without continually replacing the workstation's only PHP installation.
security posture
No matching local secret-handling manifest was found for php@8.4. Package metadata is still published here so future coverage has a stable package URL.
Before unattended agent use, check whether the tool reads plaintext credentials, writes remote state, publishes artifacts, or shells out to plugins.
local files
These source-backed paths show where this package keeps local settings or durable credentials. Automic Vault can use them as review targets for secret scanning, migration, and command approval.
Config paths the tool may read or write during local use.
