overview
Open-source authorization service & policy engine based on Google Zanzibar
history
Permify is an open-source fine-grained authorization service and policy engine inspired by Google Zanzibar. Applications define authorization schemas, write relationship or attribute data, and query REST or gRPC APIs for access decisions.
Permify was created to replace scattered, application-specific permission logic with a centralized open-source authorization engine. Its schema language and graph-based service support relationship, role, and attribute-based policies.
The project subsequently added SDKs, schema-management features, observability integrations, PostgreSQL-backed storage, and deployment tooling for cloud-native environments.
Permify developed within the broader adoption of centralized, fine-grained authorization for multi-tenant and collaborative applications. Its project materials emphasize self-hosting, REST and gRPC APIs, SDKs, Kubernetes deployment, and RBAC, ReBAC, and ABAC modeling.
FusionAuth acquired Permify in November 2025. The official announcement said that Permify would remain open source, continue as a standalone authorization engine, and receive continued community investment.
Operators run Permify as a service, define entities, relations, attributes, and permissions in its schema language, load authorization data, and call permission-check APIs from applications. The Homebrew formula provides the server CLI for local evaluation and self-hosting.
Permify packages a Zanzibar-inspired authorization model into an independently deployable service. It is notable to package and infrastructure users because permission schemas, relationship data, and authorization checks can be operated separately from application releases.
security posture
No matching local secret-handling manifest was found for permify. Package metadata is still published here so future coverage has a stable package URL.
Before unattended agent use, check whether the tool reads plaintext credentials, writes remote state, publishes artifacts, or shells out to plugins.
local files
These source-backed paths show where this package keeps local settings or durable credentials. Automic Vault can use them as review targets for secret scanning, migration, and command approval.
