overview
Parallel Presolve for Integer and Linear Optimization
history
PaPILO is a parallel, solver-independent presolve and postsolve library and command-line tool for linear and mixed-integer linear optimization.
PaPILO—Parallel Presolve for Integer and Linear Optimization—was developed in the SCIP optimization ecosystem as a C++ library and executable for presolving linear and mixed-integer linear programs.
The project uses templated arithmetic so the same routines can work with ordinary floating point, higher precision, or rational arithmetic. Its original repository is hosted by Zuse Institute Berlin, with the scipopt GitHub repository maintained as an official read-only mirror.
PaPILO was introduced as a component of SCIP Optimization Suite 7.0 and subsequently continued as part of later suite releases.
PaPILO became part of the SCIP Optimization Suite and is integrated with SCIP and SoPlex when built as part of that suite. Its upstream documentation also describes frontend integration with Gurobi, Glop, and HiGHS and a separately maintained Julia wrapper.
The standalone executable can reduce an MPS problem, write the reduced instance and a postsolve archive, then transform a solver's reduced-space solution back into the original variable space.
As a library or solver frontend, PaPILO can preprocess a model, pass it to a linked solver, and apply postsolve to the resulting solution.
PaPILO separates solver-independent presolving infrastructure from the optimization solver itself. Its templated numeric types, parallel reduction machinery, header-based interface, and standalone executable make sophisticated presolve and postsolve routines reusable across solver stacks.
