Sergey Aleksandrovich created Overmind after developing the smaller Hivemind Procfile runner. It addressed limitations the author observed in Foreman-style managers, especially buffered or altered terminal output, while adding tmux-backed process sessions and finer controls.

The project evolved into a Go command-line application supporting selective restarts, process connections, one-off commands, environment layering, and configurable Procfile paths.
