aperçu
Tools for and transforming and inspecting PDF files
historique
qpdf is a cross-platform command-line program and C++ library for structural, content-preserving PDF transformations. It is designed for inspecting PDF internals and for operations such as splitting, merging, encryption, linearization, repair, and low-level object manipulation rather than viewing or rendering document content.
qpdf's first public release was version 2.0 in April 2008. Early development concentrated on portability and recovery from malformed PDFs; version 2.1 added Windows support, a DLL, a partial C interface, AES encryption, and crypt filters in October 2009.
The project subsequently expanded its command-line and library interfaces while retaining its focus on structural transformations. Version 7 changed the primary license to Apache-2.0 and improved damaged-file recovery, while version 8 introduced an AppImage and higher-level helper APIs. Later development added JSON-based inspection and modification, job-based interfaces, broader cryptographic-provider support, and a CMake build system.
qpdf has matured into both a command-line utility and a reusable C++ library with C bindings. The supplied package metadata records packages across Homebrew, Debian and Ubuntu, Fedora, Alpine, Arch, Nix, MacPorts, Chocolatey, Scoop, winget, and openSUSE ecosystems, indicating unusually broad cross-platform packaging.
Windows support and a partial C API arrived in 2009. Later releases added AppImage distribution, continuous cross-platform release builds, shell-completion guidance for packagers, and installed pkg-config and CMake package metadata for downstream developers.
Typical command-line uses include checking or repairing PDFs, merging and splitting pages, decrypting or password-protecting documents, web-optimizing through linearization, and inspecting or changing low-level PDF objects. Developers can link against libqpdf through installed pkg-config or CMake metadata.
QDF mode produces a valid but editor-friendly PDF representation that can be repaired after editing with fix-qdf. qpdf JSON provides a language-neutral representation that can be manipulated with scripts or command-line JSON tools.
qpdf occupies a distinctive niche between a PDF viewer and a content-creation toolkit: it exposes PDF structure while preserving page content. Package maintainers and automation authors value its small dependency footprint, stable command-line interface, library API, repair behavior, encryption support, and ability to split, merge, linearize, inspect, and transform PDFs without rendering them.
Its QDF and JSON representations are especially useful to Unix-tool enthusiasts because they make otherwise opaque PDF internals accessible to text editors, scripts, and tools such as jq. The companion fix-qdf and zlib-flate executables extend that low-level toolbox.
