aperçu
Adds support for geographic objects to PostgreSQL
historique
PostGIS is the spatial extension for PostgreSQL, adding geographic data types, spatial indexes, analysis functions, and import/export utilities to the relational database.
Refractions Research created PostGIS as a spatial database technology research project. The first public pre-release appeared on May 31, 2001, initially with primitive documentation and without data loading.
PostGIS reached 1.0 in April 2005 after a long release-candidate period. That release introduced a smaller, faster on-disk representation and tighter PostgreSQL integration, marking its transition from an experimental extension into durable database infrastructure.
The project subsequently expanded beyond vector geometry to include geography, raster, topology, address standardization, and a broad spatial SQL reference while remaining governed by the PostGIS development community under OSGeo.
PostGIS grew from a Refractions Research spatial-database project into a central component of the open-source GIS stack. It is packaged across major Unix-like systems and is commonly used behind desktop GIS, mapping servers, application APIs, and geospatial ETL pipelines.
Database administrators enable PostGIS in a PostgreSQL database as an extension. Application and GIS users then store points, lines, polygons, geography values, and rasters; create spatial indexes; and run spatial predicates, measurements, transformations, and joins in SQL.
The package also supplies utilities such as `shp2pgsql`, `pgsql2shp`, `raster2pgsql`, and `postgis_restore` for data loading, extraction, and migration. PostGIS settings are PostgreSQL GUCs rather than a separately documented PostGIS configuration file.
PostGIS is a defining example of PostgreSQL's extension model: a package installation adds substantial domain-specific data types, indexes, SQL functions, upgrade machinery, and command-line loaders to an existing database platform.
Its packaging connects PostgreSQL with a native geospatial dependency stack that includes GEOS, PROJ, and GDAL. Compatibility between those components, database-extension upgrade paths, and dump/restore tooling makes PostGIS particularly significant to distribution maintainers and database operators.
