Perl is a mature, portable general-purpose programming language especially associated with text processing, Unix automation, and the CPAN module ecosystem.
Historique du projet
Larry Wall created Perl as a practical language for text processing and systems work. The official release record dates Perl 1.000 to 18 December 1987; successive major lines expanded regular-expression support, binary-data handling, and the broader language model.
Perl 5.000 arrived on 17 October 1994 and became the basis of the actively maintained language represented by this package. Development is community-run by the Perl 5 Porters, and the primary source repository is maintained under the Perl organization on GitHub.

Perl became a standard Unix scripting and system-administration language and expanded into web development, networking, database work, testing, and general application development. Its portability across a large range of systems helped make interpreters and development packages routine entries in operating-system package collections.
CPAN established Perl's central module-distribution culture. The core distribution includes tools such as `cpan`, `perldoc`, `prove`, and numerous POD and archive utilities, so installing Perl provides both the runtime and a substantial language-tooling environment.
Modes d'utilisation
Execute a source file with `perl program.pl`, use a shebang for directly executable scripts, or use `-e`/`-E` for command-line programs. `perldoc` provides the installed manuals, while `cpan` configures and installs modules from CPAN.
The bundled CPAN client stores user-specific settings in `~/.cpan/CPAN/MyConfig.pm`; a site configuration can be supplied as `CPAN/Config.pm`. These are CPAN-client settings rather than universal Perl interpreter configuration files.
