Panache was developed by Johan Larsson as a Rust-based formatter, linter, and language server for Markdown-family formats, with particular emphasis on Pandoc Markdown, Quarto, and R Markdown.

The official changelog records a 1.0 release in February 2026 with a basic formatter, language server, parsing, completion, and automatic flavor detection. Subsequent releases added linting, broader syntax coverage, integrations, and more project-aware language-server behavior.

Panache entered the Pandoc-family authoring ecosystem as a Rust tool that applies the same parser to formatting, linting, and language-server features. Homebrew and Nix packaging make it available outside editor-specific extension channels.

Its documented integrations cover editors, command-line checks, pre-commit hooks, and CI, allowing one configuration and diagnostic model to be reused throughout an authoring workflow.

Users run panache format, panache lint, or panache lsp locally and can apply the same behavior in editor and CI integrations.

Configuration is discovered from project TOML files, PANACHE_CONFIG, or a platform-specific user configuration directory. The nearest project configuration takes precedence.
