Dirk W. Hoffmann began vAmiga development in January 2019 as a native macOS emulator for the Commodore Amiga 500, 1000, and 2000. The project shares the author's emphasis on timing accuracy and approachable native interfaces seen in VirtualC64.
Later releases improved controller support, snapshot and disk-image handling, debugging, and the emulator core. In 2026, an experimental 5.0 line added AGA support, extending the project's original OCS/ECS-oriented design toward Amiga 1200-era hardware.
Adoptionsgeschichte
vAmiga provides a native macOS interface rather than a cross-platform launcher. Users supply a legally obtained Kickstart ROM, then load Amiga disk images and control emulated input devices through the Mac application.
The core also inspired WebAssembly ports, including vAmigaWeb and Neoartcr. Those derivatives brought the emulator to web browsers and mobile devices while the upstream application remained focused on macOS.
