Plzip is a massively parallel implementation of the lzip lossless compressor, designed to compress and decompress large lzip files across multiple processor cores.
Projektgeschichte
Plzip was written and is maintained by Antonio Diaz Diaz. An official release announcement documents version 0.5 in February 2010 and notes that this release added parallel decompression. The current official manual identifies version 1.13, dated 7 March 2026.
Adoptionsgeschichte
Plzip was positioned for large files and multiprocessor machines, including software distribution and large-scale archival work. Its compatibility with the lzip format lets it participate in the wider lzip tool family rather than creating a separate parallel-compression format.

Plzip replaces input files with .lz output by default and can also stream data, test integrity, list members, or select an explicit output. It divides compression input into independently compressed members and can decompress multiple members concurrently; the available parallelism depends on file size and member structure.
