Verlauf

Projektgeschichte und Nutzung

PlutoBook is a lightweight C/C++ library and command-line toolkit for laying out HTML or XML as paged documents and exporting PDF or bitmap output.

Projektgeschichte

PlutoBook is a C and C++ paged-media rendering engine maintained by the PlutoPrint organization. It implements its own HTML, XML, CSS, SVG, font, and page-layout machinery and renders to PDF, bitmaps, or other Cairo-supported surfaces.

The first documented release was published in August 2025. Subsequent development rapidly expanded CSS, SVG, international-text, table, flexbox, and paged-media support; the project moved to MPL-2.0 in January 2026.

Adoptionsgeschichte

PlutoBook entered Homebrew in September 2025, giving macOS and Linux users packaged access to its library and html2pdf/html2png utilities. The project also serves as the rendering engine beneath the PlutoPrint Python and Node.js bindings.

Wie es verwendet wird

Developers embed the C or C++ API to load HTML, XML, files, or URLs and render complete documents or individual pages. Package users can also invoke html2pdf or html2png for direct conversions, previews, reports, invoices, and other static print workflows.

Warum Paket-Nerds sich dafür interessieren

PlutoBook offers a packageable HTML-to-PDF engine that does not embed Chromium, WebKit, or Gecko. This makes it noteworthy for systems where a dedicated C/C++ rendering library and small command-line converters are preferable to browser automation.
