PlantUML turns textual descriptions into UML and other diagrams. It is commonly used from the command line or embedded in documentation and development tools so diagrams can be maintained as source.

The official project documentation dates PlantUML's integration history to 2009. It developed from a textual UML renderer into a broader diagramming system supporting UML and non-UML diagram families, multiple output formats, preprocessing, themes, and several layout engines.

PlantUML spread through diagram-as-code workflows: diagram definitions can be versioned with documentation and rendered through the CLI, editors, IDEs, wikis, Git hosting, and build pipelines. The official quick-start page describes integrations accumulated since 2009.

Write a diagram between directives such as `@startuml` and `@enduml`, then invoke PlantUML on the source file to generate an image such as PNG or SVG.

A configuration file can be supplied explicitly with `-config`; PlantUML does not document a single default configuration-file location. Graphviz is used by default for several UML diagram families.
