Sebastian Bergmann created PHPUnit in 2001. It was initially developed in PHP's CVS and released through PEAR, moved to the project's Subversion server in 2006, and moved to GitHub in 2009. PEAR ceased being the preferred installation mechanism as Composer and signed PHAR releases became the normal choices.
