PHP is an open-source, general-purpose scripting language particularly suited to web development, with an official interpreter implemented primarily in C.
Projektgeschichte
Rasmus Lerdorf created PHP's predecessor in 1994 as C-based CGI binaries and publicly released PHP Tools in June 1995. The project subsequently evolved from personal web utilities into a general-purpose scripting language.
Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski rewrote the parser for PHP 3 and later developed the Zend Engine used by PHP 4. PHP 5 introduced Zend Engine 2 and a revised object model; PHP 7 brought Zend Engine 3 and major performance improvements; PHP 8 added features including union types, attributes, named arguments, and an optimizing JIT compiler.
Adoptionsgeschichte
PHP spread with server-rendered web development because it could be embedded in HTML and deployed through common web-server configurations. It grew from a Unix CGI utility into a cross-platform language used by major publishing systems, frameworks, and web applications.
Package-manager installations commonly combine the interpreter with selected extensions, a web-server integration or PHP-FPM, and Composer for project dependencies. This division between system packages and project-local libraries is central to modern PHP deployment.
