Projektgeschichte

Oxfmt was developed inside the Oxc project as a high-performance formatter for the JavaScript ecosystem. Its design uses Prettier-compatible output as a baseline while implementing formatting on Oxc's Rust compiler stack.

The project progressed through an alpha and beta while adding native support for JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, CSS-family formats, GraphQL, YAML, TOML, and Markdown, with additional formats handled through bundled compatibility components.

Adoptionsgeschichte

Oxfmt was announced as an alpha in December 2025 and reached beta in February 2026. The beta announcement reported broader ecosystem adoption after expansion into more file formats, embedded-language formatting, import sorting, and Tailwind CSS support.

Its Prettier-compatible command conventions and migration command are intended to let existing JavaScript projects change formatters with limited workflow disruption. Editor, CI, and coding-agent integrations are documented as first-class use cases.

Wie es verwendet wird

Run oxfmt to rewrite supported files or oxfmt --check in CI. It works without configuration, but projects can commit an Oxfmt configuration to keep editors and automation consistent.

Oxfmt searches upward for .oxfmtrc.json, .oxfmtrc.jsonc, oxfmt.config.ts, or oxfmt.config.mts and also reads selected .editorconfig properties. Use oxfmt --migrate prettier to convert supported Prettier configuration and ignore settings.

In a combined Oxc workflow, apply oxlint --fix before oxfmt so semantic lint fixes occur before final formatting.
