Project history

Qt began as a cross-platform C++ GUI toolkit and released publicly in 1995. As the framework grew, its codebase was modularized into repositories with qtbase holding the foundational modules.

Qt Base now contains core facilities and major modules including Qt Core, GUI, Widgets, Network, SQL, Test, XML, and platform integration, together with build and deployment tools.

The Qt 6 transition moved the framework's own build system from qmake to CMake while retaining qmake for application development.

Adoption history

Qt Base inherits Qt's early adoption through KDE and its later expansion across desktop, embedded, mobile, automotive, and device applications.

Its modules became the common foundation beneath both traditional Qt Widgets applications and higher-level Qt facilities such as QML, multimedia, WebEngine, and specialized add-ons.

How it is used

Command-line applications can use Qt Core for event loops, files, processes, settings, containers, and platform abstraction.

Desktop applications commonly add Qt GUI and Qt Widgets for windows, painting, input, images, layouts, dialogs, and accessibility.

Higher-level Qt modules link against Qt Base facilities. Applications can use qt.conf or qt6.conf to override runtime paths for plugins, translations, libraries, and QML imports.

Qt Base is the anchor source repository in modular Qt packaging. Distributions commonly split its libraries, headers, plugins, utilities, and development files into numerous binary packages.

A dedicated qtbase package is useful when a build needs Qt's foundational modules and tools without installing the entire set of Qt add-ons.
