history
Qt 5 is the compatibility package for the fifth major generation of the cross-platform Qt application framework, first released in 2012.
Qt 5.0 was released in December 2012 following the establishment of the openly governed Qt Project and Digia's acquisition of Qt from Nokia.
The generation increased modularity and moved Qt's center of gravity toward Qt Quick, QML, JavaScript, and scene-graph rendering while retaining the mature Qt Widgets API.
Qt 6 succeeded the series in December 2020, turning Qt 5 into a compatibility line for established applications and dependencies.
Qt 5 offered existing C++ desktop applications a migration path while expanding Qt Quick and QML for embedded, mobile, and device-interface development.
Its long-lived maintenance lines made Qt 5 a durable target for commercial products and open-source desktop applications. It consequently remains packaged as a compatibility branch after the arrival of Qt 6.
Developers install Qt 5 to build or maintain applications whose source, third-party modules, plugins, or deployment environments still target Qt 5.
Typical projects use qmake project files or CMake, link selected Qt modules, and employ tools such as moc, uic, and rcc during builds.
An optional qt.conf beside an executable, inside a macOS application's Resources directory, or embedded in the resource system can override Qt's runtime paths.
Versioned Qt 5 packages preserve an older but still widely encountered ABI and tool ecosystem. They are important when dependencies, plugins, or application source have not migrated to Qt 6.
Distribution packaging frequently splits Qt 5 into runtime, development, module, and tool packages; the Homebrew formula instead offers a convenient compatibility installation with qmake, moc, uic, rcc, Designer, Linguist, and QML tools.
security posture
No matching local secret-handling manifest was found for qt@5. Package metadata is still published here so future coverage has a stable package URL.
Before unattended agent use, check whether the tool reads plaintext credentials, writes remote state, publishes artifacts, or shells out to plugins.
local files
These source-backed paths show where this package keeps local settings or durable credentials. Automic Vault can use them as review targets for secret scanning, migration, and command approval.
Config paths the tool may read or write during local use.

| Caveats | We agreed to the Qt open source license for you. If this is unacceptable you should uninstall. You can add Homebrew's Qt to QtCreator's "Qt Versions" in: Preferences > Qt Versions > Link with Qt... pressing "Choose..." and selecting as the Qt installation path: $HOMEBREW_PREFIX/opt/qt@5 QtWebEngine is no longer included as its Chromium has unfixed vulnerabilities. |
