Generic syntax highlighter
history
Pygments is a generic Python syntax-highlighting library and command-line tool for programming languages and structured text formats.
Pygments began with the 0.5 public release in October 2006 and reached 1.0 in November 2008. The 1.1 release added Python 3 support in 2009. Continued releases have expanded its lexer collection and maintained both the embeddable Python API and the `pygmentize` command.
Pygments' library-first design let documentation generators, code-hosting systems, forums, wikis, and other applications embed the same lexer-and-formatter machinery. Its pure-Python distribution and permissive license also made it straightforward for language and operating-system package managers to carry.
Use `pygmentize` for shell pipelines and file conversion, selecting lexers, formatters, and styles as needed. Python applications can instead call the Pygments API directly to lex source text and produce HTML, terminal, document, or image output.
Pygments is infrastructure that users often consume indirectly through documentation and publishing tools. Package maintainers care about its broad lexer inventory, stable token model, plugin interface, and ability to emit terminal, HTML, LaTeX, image, and other presentation formats from one implementation.
