overview
Utilities for manipulating PostScript documents
history
PSUtils is a suite of command-line utilities for manipulating PDF and PostScript documents, particularly page selection, rearrangement, booklet signatures, n-up printing, and page resizing or rotation.
Version 1 was written by Angus Duggan; the maintained project is written and maintained by Reuben Thomas. The official acknowledgements trace several commands to earlier DVI utilities: psselect to dviselect, psbook to dvibook, and pstops to dvidvi, while psjoin originated with Tom Sato.
The modern suite handles both PDF and PostScript while retaining its page-oriented command structure. It expects PostScript input to follow the Document Structuring Conventions, although it deliberately does not reject nonconforming files automatically.
The official README says PSUtils is available in most GNU/Linux distributions, Homebrew on macOS, and Cygwin on Windows. Its long-lived commands remain useful in automated publishing and printing workflows where PostScript Document Structuring Conventions are still encountered.
Users compose commands such as psselect, psbook, psnup, psresize, and pstops in print or publishing pipelines. Typical jobs include selecting page ranges, arranging signatures for booklet printing, placing multiple pages on one sheet, or changing page geometry.
PostScript inputs work best when they conform to Adobe's Document Structuring Conventions. Named paper sizes are obtained through libpaper.
PSUtils is a classic Unix-toolbox package: separate commands perform page selection, booklet imposition, n-up layout, resizing, rotation, and resource extraction. It preserves a scriptable bridge between TeX-era PostScript workflows and contemporary PDF processing.
Its documented dependency on libpaper also illustrates how Unix distributions centralize regional paper-size policy instead of embedding A4 or Letter defaults independently in every document tool.

Before unattended agent use, check whether the tool reads plaintext credentials, writes remote state, publishes artifacts, or shells out to plugins.
