history
Homebrew Portable Ruby is a relocatable build of the Ruby runtime maintained for Homebrew's own bootstrapping and execution needs. It is based on upstream Ruby but packaged with portability-oriented build choices and a controlled set of gems.
Ruby itself was created by Yukihiro Matsumoto in 1993 as an object-oriented scripting language. Homebrew later created Portable Ruby builds that could be installed and executed from different filesystem locations.
The dedicated homebrew-portable-ruby tap contained formulae and tools for building those relocatable runtimes. Its official README now marks the tap deprecated and explains that the work moved into Homebrew's main brew and homebrew-core repositories.
Portable Ruby is primarily Homebrew infrastructure. Homebrew's runtime-selection code installs the vendored build when a suitable system Ruby is unavailable, while the official formula supplies relocatable bottles for supported macOS and Linux architectures.
The former dedicated tap was eventually archived after its formulae and build tooling moved into Homebrew/brew and Homebrew/homebrew-core. The packaging concept continued even though its repository home changed.
Homebrew automatically selects its vendored Portable Ruby when the system lacks a suitable interpreter. Users can also install the keg-only formula, but it is principally infrastructure for Homebrew rather than a Ruby version manager or application-specific environment.
The formula provides the Ruby interpreter and standard Ruby tooling, while including Bootsnap for faster loading and cache precompilation.
Portable Ruby is an example of a package manager packaging its own implementation language to reduce dependence on host operating-system runtimes. Relocatability and conservative compatibility matter more here than presenting another general-purpose Ruby installation to users.
This bootstrapping pattern lets Homebrew run consistently across machines whose system Ruby versions, library layouts, or availability differ.
