overview
Standard ML implementation
history
Poly/ML is a long-running implementation of Standard ML with an interactive environment, native-code compiler, debugger, Basis Library, threading support, and foreign-function interface.
David Matthews originally wrote the system at Cambridge University's Computer Laboratory in the experimental Poly language. It was subsequently developed by Abstract Hardware Limited and translated into Standard ML.
Cambridge University Technical Services reacquired the rights in 1999 and agreed to make Poly/ML freely available. Later work implemented the Standard Basis Library, completed support for the revised Standard ML definition, and rewrote the runtime system.
Poly/ML became closely associated with large formal-methods systems. The official site names Isabelle and HOL4 as major projects for which it is a preferred implementation.
Run `poly` for an interactive Standard ML session, load source into the top level during development, or use the compiler and export facilities to build applications. It is particularly common in theorem-proving and other large Standard ML codebases.
Poly/ML is one of the durable Standard ML implementations available through general-purpose package managers. It is especially notable for combining an interactive top level and fast native-code compiler with threads, garbage-collector multiprocessor support, debugging, and foreign-function facilities.
For language-runtime collectors, Poly/ML represents a distinct Standard ML niche: SML/NJ emphasizes an interactive programming environment, while MLton specializes in whole-program optimization. Poly/ML's continued use by theorem provers gives it relevance beyond language preservation.
