overview
Portable Computing Language
history
PoCL, the Portable Computing Language, is an MIT-licensed implementation of the OpenCL standard designed for portability across CPUs, accelerators, and research hardware.
PoCL was created to provide a portable, performance-oriented implementation of OpenCL rather than tying applications to one hardware vendor. Its architecture uses Clang and LLVM to compile kernels and provides a driver framework for different device types.
The project broadened from its CPU-oriented foundation to support accelerator and remote-execution backends. Its CPU and Level Zero drivers passed the official OpenCL 3.0 conformance tests in January 2025.
PoCL is used by OpenCL developers, compiler researchers, Linux distributions, and hardware projects that need a portable or adaptable OpenCL runtime. Upstream documents packaged availability and support spanning CPUs, Level Zero devices, CUDA, Vulkan, OpenASIP, and remote execution.
Developers use PoCL to run and test OpenCL applications, provide a CPU implementation where no vendor runtime is available, experiment with new device backends, or supply an OpenCL runtime for higher-level systems such as SYCL. Build and runtime behavior depends on the selected LLVM release, device drivers, and system ICD loader.
PoCL gives package managers an open OpenCL implementation that can serve as a CPU fallback or bring OpenCL to targets without a suitable vendor runtime. Its interaction with ICD loaders, LLVM compatibility, and optional device backends makes it an important component of heterogeneous-computing dependency graphs.
