overview
Log analyzer for PostgreSQL
history
pgBadger is an offline PostgreSQL log analyzer that generates interactive HTML and other report formats for query performance, sessions, locks, checkpoints, autovacuum, errors, and related operational activity.
Gilles Darold created pgBadger as a fast PostgreSQL log analyzer and released its early series in 2012. It was positioned as a replacement for the older pgFouine workflow and used JavaScript-rendered graphs in self-contained reports.
The project added incremental reporting, additional log formats, richer performance and error analysis, and multiple machine-readable outputs while retaining a command-line workflow and PostgreSQL license.
pgBadger's single-command, pure-Perl design and ability to work from existing log files made it straightforward to package and run on database hosts, reporting hosts, and administrative workstations. source_facts.package-manager records availability across Homebrew and several major Unix distribution ecosystems.
Support expanded beyond ordinary PostgreSQL stderr logs to formats and environments including csvlog, jsonlog, syslog, cloud-hosted PostgreSQL logs, compressed or remote inputs, and PgBouncer statistics logs.
DBAs run pgBadger against one or more local, compressed, remote, or streamed log inputs. Common uses include identifying slow or frequent queries, inspecting errors and lock activity, evaluating checkpoints and autovacuum, and generating scheduled daily or weekly reports.
pgBadger represents the classic Unix package pattern of converting already-available operational text into a portable artifact. It provides deep PostgreSQL-specific analysis and shareable HTML reports without requiring a permanently running agent or monitoring service.

Edit postgresql.conf (in $HOMEBREW_PREFIX/var/postgres if you use Homebrew's PostgreSQL), set the following parameters, and restart PostgreSQL: log_destination = 'stderr' log_line_prefix = '%t [%p]: [%l-1] user=%u,db=%d ' log_statement = 'none' log_duration = off log_min_duration_statement = 0 log_checkpoints = on log_connections = on log_disconnections = on log_lock_waits = on log_temp_files = 0 lc_messages = 'C' |
