Project history and usage

par2cmdline creates, verifies, and repairs PAR2 parity archives. It adds recoverable redundancy to a set of files without replacing the original data or acting as a general backup system.

Project history

Parchive's first stable format dates to October 2001. PAR2 followed to remove practical PAR1 constraints and allow more flexible recovery sets. Peter Clements was among the PAR2 specification authors and developed the original par2cmdline client.

Original par2cmdline development occurred on SourceForge and later stalled. Development was revived in the official GitHub repository in December 2011, incorporating distribution patches and OpenMP work descended from par2cmdline-mt.

Adoption history

PAR files became associated particularly with incomplete or damaged Usenet downloads, while the format and client remain usable with any kind of file. The maintained client is available through several Unix-like package ecosystems listed in source_facts.package-manager.

How it is used

Run `par2 create` with a target `.par2` name and protected files, later use `par2 verify` to detect damage, and use `par2 repair` when enough recovery blocks remain. Equivalent helper commands are `par2create`, `par2verify`, and `par2repair`.
