libusb-compat is the libusb project's compatibility layer for software written against the old libusb-0.1 API while systems moved to the newer libusb-1.0 stack.

The project appeared during the libusb-1.0 transition as a deliberately conservative bridge: keep legacy usb_* callers building and running while letting distributions ship the newer libusb implementation underneath. Its release notes show an initial beta in May 2008, a 0.1.0 release in December 2008, and later fixes focused on endpoint-addressing compatibility, initialization behavior, cross-compiling, and avoiding symbol clashes with libusb-1.0.

The package became useful to Unix package maintainers because many older USB tools and libraries expected libusb-0.1 headers or libusb-config even after libusb-1.0 had become the maintained API. Keeping it packaged let distributions retire older implementation details without forcing every leaf package to port at once.
