## Project history and usage

mtoc is a narrow Apple/Darwin build tool: a Mach-O to PE/COFF binary converter built from Apple's open-source cctools distribution. Homebrew packages it from the apple-oss-distributions/cctools source archive, builds the mtoc Xcode scheme, installs the mtoc binary and man page, and marks it as conflicting with ocmtoc because both provide the same command name.

### Project history

Its main visible adoption path is firmware development on macOS. The TianoCore EDK II Xcode guide says Xcode supplies many development tools but not all tools needed for TianoCore, and names mtoc as the utility required to convert macOS Mach-O images to the PE/COFF form required by the UEFI specification. In that workflow, developers build EDK II firmware on macOS with Xcode and use mtoc as the format bridge between Apple's native object/executable format and UEFI's PE/COFF image expectations.

### How it is used

As a package, mtoc is not a general binary-conversion suite like objconv and not the whole cctools collection. It is the small extract a Homebrew user installs when the build chain specifically asks for mtoc, most often through EDK II or related UEFI build instructions.
