Protomaps introduced PMTiles as an open single-file archive format for tiled data. The reference implementations carry a BSD 3-Clause license, while the specification is public domain or CC0 where applicable. Version 3 is the current documented format generation.

The pmtiles CLI can inspect local or remote archives, verify structure, extract geographic or zoom subsets, merge and cluster archives, convert MBTiles, serve Z/X/Y endpoints, edit metadata, and upload files to cloud storage. Private cloud access uses each provider's default authentication, such as AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY for S3-compatible services.
