The public GitHub repository was created in July 2017 and is maintained under the VMware Tanzu organization. The repository and documentation describe Sonobuoy as a cluster-agnostic, extensible way to run diagnostic plugins and gather Kubernetes resource and node data.

Sonobuoy's documented release model changed at v0.20: the project decoupled its releases from Kubernetes releases while continuing to track functional compatibility across Kubernetes versions. That matters for operators because the CLI can be updated on its own cadence while still running conformance workflows against supported clusters.

Sonobuoy became part of the practical Kubernetes certification and troubleshooting toolkit because its default workflow runs Kubernetes conformance tests and produces artifacts that can be checked with `sonobuoy results`. The package-manager metadata in this batch shows Sonobuoy packaged by Homebrew, Nix, and openSUSE. Its audience is narrower than everyday developer CLIs, but important in Kubernetes infrastructure circles where conformance and repeatable cluster diagnostics are routine.

A common Sonobuoy session is `sonobuoy run --wait`, then `sonobuoy retrieve`, then `sonobuoy results` on the returned archive. Advanced users add custom plugins, registry overrides, private image handling, or alternate e2e test selections.

The tool expects an administrator's Kubernetes context through `kubeconfig` and `KUBECONFIG`, but it does not define a standalone Sonobuoy credentials file. Its configuration is mostly command-line and Kubernetes-resource driven.
