Global proxy for Go modules
historique
goproxy is a Go module proxy server and router from the goproxy.io project. Its significance comes from the Go modules transition: once GOPROXY became a first-class part of the go command, small proxy servers became build-infrastructure packages rather than optional caching tricks.
The goproxyio/goproxy repository was created in 2018, the same period in which Go modules moved into public use. Its README describes it as a global proxy for Go modules and documents proxy mode, router mode, Docker use, Kubernetes deployment, private-module routing, and authentication workarounds.
The Go project launched the public module mirror, index, and checksum database in 2019 and documented that Go 1.13 would use the mirror and checksum database by default for module users. That official infrastructure made GOPROXY a normal part of Go dependency resolution.
goproxy.io sits in the third-party/self-hostable side of that ecosystem: teams can run a proxy locally, route selected private modules directly, or point to another upstream proxy.
The package has a narrower package-manager footprint than gopls or gops, but it belongs to a critical class of Go build tooling. Its adoption is best understood through the broader adoption of module proxies after Go 1.13.
The README's Docker and Kubernetes examples show the expected operational setting: goproxy is commonly deployed as service infrastructure, not merely installed as a developer laptop command.
In proxy mode, goproxy listens for Go module proxy protocol requests and uses the local go command and a cache directory to answer them. Users then set `GOPROXY=http://host:port` for clients.
In router mode, goproxy can forward public module requests to an upstream proxy while sending excluded private module patterns directly to their repositories. The README documents this with `-proxy` and `-exclude` flags.
The Go module reference explains the larger GOPROXY, GOSUMDB, GOPRIVATE, GONOPROXY, and GONOSUMDB environment-variable model that goproxy deployments fit into.
goproxy matters to package nerds because it embodies Go's post-GOPATH dependency distribution model: module metadata, version lists, `.mod` files, and zip archives served over a simple HTTP protocol.
It is also a practical bridge between public module mirrors and private enterprise code. The `-exclude` routing pattern maps directly onto the package-manager problem of separating public cacheability from private-source access.
For reproducible builds, module proxies are important because they reduce dependence on live VCS availability and pair with checksum databases for tamper detection.
