Flink CDC began as a connector-oriented ecosystem around Apache Flink change-data-capture jobs, then was donated into the Apache Flink project by Ververica. Apache board records from 2024 describe the Flink community accepting the codebase because CDC use cases with Flink SQL were popular among users.

After the donation, Flink CDC became a Flink subproject with its own Apache repository, documentation tree, and releases. The first Apache release called out in ASF board records was cdc-3.1.0 on 2024-05-17.

Common usage is database-to-database, database-to-lake, or database-to-stream synchronization where a pipeline first scans historical tables and then keeps reading log changes. The official docs also call out sub-second streaming pipelines and exactly-once processing after failures.
