aperçu
Implements brute force attack to recover WPA/WPA2 passkeys
historique
Reaver is a command-line wireless-security auditing tool that attacks WPS registrar PINs to test whether a target access point can expose its WPA/WPA2 passphrase.
Craig Heffner created Reaver 1.0 in 2011 as a practical attack against Wi-Fi Protected Setup registrar PINs. The official community-fork README identifies versions 1.0 through 1.4 as the original line.
The t6x community fork carried the project forward as Reaver 1.5.3 and then began the 1.6.x cycle, adding fixes, features, and support for the offline Pixie Dust technique.
Reaver became a widely packaged wireless-security auditing utility. The supplied package metadata records packages for Homebrew, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora-family systems, Arch Linux, and MacPorts.
The community fork continued development after the original releases, incorporating fixes, hardware-compatibility work, and the Pixie Dust attack workflow.
Authorized auditors first use Wash to identify WPS-enabled access points, then run Reaver against a selected BSSID through a monitor-mode wireless interface. Reaver can attempt online PIN enumeration or invoke Pixiewps-related offline techniques where the access point is vulnerable.
The tool is intended only for networks the operator owns or is explicitly authorized to test.
Reaver is notable in security-oriented package collections because it turned a protocol-design weakness into a practical command-line auditing workflow. Its pairing with Wash and later Pixiewps also illustrates how focused Unix security tools compose around discovery, capture, and attack stages.
