Protomaps introduced PMTiles as an open single-file archive format for tiled data. The reference implementations carry a BSD 3-Clause license, while the specification is public domain or CC0 where applicable. Version 3 is the current documented format generation.

PMTiles has been integrated into the broader web-mapping toolchain: official material documents clients for MapLibre, Leaflet, OpenLayers, Go, JavaScript, and Python, while Tippecanoe 2.17 and later can write PMTiles directly. The format is designed for deployment on ordinary HTTP servers and object stores such as S3-compatible services.

Private cloud access uses each provider's default authentication, such as AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY for S3-compatible services.
