## Project history and usage

Syrtis is a local-first macOS menu-bar dashboard for token usage, estimated cost, activity, and subscription quotas across AI coding tools. It reads session data already stored on the computer and requires no Syrtis account or cloud synchronization.

### Project history

The product line began as a fork of tokcat, which itself used tokscale. The current macOS application is a ground-up native Swift rewrite with a Rust core derived from tokscale-core rather than a continuation of tokcat's Tauri code.

The macOS application was called TokenBar before version 2.0 and was renamed Syrtis while preserving existing settings, history, and login-item state. A Windows tray application uses the same Syrtis name and shared Rust parsing core.

### Adoption history

Syrtis packages local AI-coding usage analysis as a native macOS menu-bar application installed through its Homebrew tap or signed releases. Its support for many coding agents reflects the spread of local session-log formats across Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Kiro, and related tools.

### How it is used

Users install the cask, open the menu-bar application, and inspect overview, quota, model, monthly, daily, hourly, statistics, and agent views. The application reads supported agents' local logs and, where enabled, their existing provider authentication to display quota information.

### Why package nerds care

Syrtis is significant to package enthusiasts because it combines a native SwiftUI shell, a shared Rust parsing core, a third-party Homebrew cask, and Sparkle updates around data produced by many independently packaged coding agents. It also illustrates how an application can provide usage observability without requiring its own cloud account.

### Timeline

- Initial product line: The project began from the tokcat and tokscale ecosystem.
- Native rewrite: A SwiftUI macOS shell was built around a shared Rust parsing core.
- Version 2.0: The macOS application changed its public name from TokenBar to Syrtis while retaining user state.

### Related projects

- The official credits identify tokscale as the parsing and dashboard ancestor, tokcat as the original menu-bar concept, RunCat as the inspiration for the animated cat, and CodexBar as a reference for quota-pace cards.

## Security Notes

No matching local secret-handling manifest was found for Syrtis. Package metadata is still published here so future coverage has a stable package URL.
